Affiliate Spotlight

After two years of research and planning, a group of people representing healthcare, government, business, and breast cancer survivors is very pleased to announce the North Dakota Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Board President, Tara Lacher, is grateful, stating, "A small group of us worked hard for a two year period to put together the necessary information to apply for affiliate status.  In a state as large as North Dakkota, working on a statewide initiative can be difficult, but through e-mail and conference call meetings, we accomplished a great deal.  We plan to expand this small group to a strong, statewide network of donors and volunteers."

Applying for Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate status is a comprehensive process, involving the development of a document that fills a three-inch, three-ring binder.  Affiliate status is a serious commitment by both the national organization and the affiliate itself.  The affiliate makes a commitment to provide education and awareness within their area, and to raise funds to support the national research effort, as well as local issues.

"Seventy-five percent of the funds raised within the state will stay in the state," states Fundraising Chair, Cher Hersrud.  "I am excited to raise funds that will address issues that include accessible transportation for treatment, affordable treatment, better education and awareness of both diagnosis and treatment, and the creation of education and network within the state for those of us who are survivors."

Board President Lacher states, "We can make a difference in North Dakota.  We can fund research that seeks to eliminate breast cancer; we can address specific North Dakota issues including better access to transportation for treatment, accessible mammograms, and earlier detection.  Through the national organization, we can support research to end breast cancer."

"Nearly every individual and family across the state has somehow been affected by breast cancer," states Mary Ann Foss, Board Vice President.  "This affiliate will work hand in hand with Women's Way to provide education, support, and access to North Dakota.
